Thanks Frank - I did read that article. I am a regular lurker on your thread even though I haven't posted. I did make note of the article's comment on Nortel's project:

A fully integrated SiGe OC-192 Sonet receiver for 10-Gbit/s applications

I know that optical switching and routing is where the developments have to come to keep up with optical transport.

There has not been much comment on Nortel's plans for Packet Optera. As you know they claim to integrate the optical layer with the switching and routing layer. This claim has been criticized by some as vaporware but I find they usually follow through on their technology claims.

Frank - By way of supplement to my post, I notice that NEC has also developed a photonic routing technology.
