"Don't you wonder why AOL didn't release its national sign-up rate last quarter?"

Actually, they did disclose it. If you look at their SEC filings, they added (on a net basis) 700,000 domestic AOL subscribers and 300,000 domestic CompuServe subscribers. Over a 92 day quarter, that works out to 7,609 AOL subscribers per day and 3,261 CompuServe subscribers per day. In total, they added 10,870 domestic subscribers per day.

From the Form 10-Q for the period ending September 30, 1999:

At September 30, 1999, the Company had approximately 18.7 million AOL service subscribers, including 16.2 million in the United States and 2.5 million in the rest of the world. Also at that date, the Company had approximately 2.2 million CompuServe service subscribers, with 1.3 million in the United States and 900,000 in the rest of the world.

From the Form 10-K for the year ending June 30, 1999:

At June 30, 1999, the Company had approximately 17.6 million AOL brand subscribers, including approximately 15.5 million in North America and approximately 2.1 million in the rest of the world. Also at that date, the Company had approximately 2 million CompuServe brand subscribers, including approximately 1 million in North America and approximately 1 million in the rest of world.

"Perhaps this is a statistic [AOL] wouldn't like matched against NetZero's 9,000 daily number attained via word of mouth."

Actually, NZRO was advertising in the Chicago area during the two month period prior to the IPO.

I would also suggest that it is more useful to look at the number of subscribers that have actually used NZRO during the past month as opposed to the number of subscribers that have registered for the service. During the September quarter, NZRO added 810,000 registered users but the number of users that actually utilized the service during the month of September only increased by 407,000 from the number of users that utilized the service during the month of June.

While you could argue that NZRO added 8,804 (810,000 divided by 92 days) registered subscribers per day during the September quarter, it is probably more useful to point out that they added 4,424 (407,000 divided by 92 days) users per day during the September quarter.

As noted in my prior post, AOL, including CompuServe, added 10,870 domestic subscribers per day during the same period.
