I think this is called the Systray. Stuff here is harder to manage. You can download programs to help you with Systray stuff.

You can try this to remove the offending icons. Go to Start/run/type in "msconfig"(without quotes)/click ok/click startup tab and uncheck the boxes associated with the icons you're trying to remove. Make a note of what you disabled just in case you disable something not associated with what you doing. If you find that you have disabled something you need, go back and put the checkmark back in the box and restart your computer. Hope this helps.

Open the icon you want to remove by either right or left clicking it and it may have display options that you can configure.Also go to the programs file and view the read me file for information.The link below may help.I'll look for more info later and will post if I find any.
