Article in the WSJ today. Gist of article is that Ford will relay web site visitors who want to buy a Ford from its website to Priceline where Ford dealers can negotiate directly with the buyer for the sale. Perhaps a reason why PCLN opened higher. According to article, trials start today in Florida & will last until the end of the year. PCLN will receive a fee from Ford (Undisclosed).

When PCLN was launched, I saw it with a degree of skepticism. The idea of a reverse auction for hotel rooms and airline tickets where you couldn't specify which airline or hotel chain (???? ) and then had to take what the successful bidder offered didn't seem to me to be the right approach. Kind of like buying a car where price was the only determinant (I'm probably wrong in the specifics of how PCLN operates and the analogy is likely flawed. I'm relaying the impression I was given)

Flawed impressions aside, the F/PCLN announcement is, in my opinion, a slick way of marrying the mfgr and the consumer while keeping the retailer (the dealer) in the loop. This commerce model seems to me to have a greater chance of success then some of the others that are floating around out there. Reactions? Comments? Thoughts??
