Oh, yeah! It's the reason I stay out of chat rooms by and large. There is love and there is sex and there is warmth and there is friendship; from time to time they get weirdly and marvelously tangled.

But I know exactly what she means: It's different somehow, even more potentially meaningless than encounters in bars. I haven't read the entire article, will do so now, just wanted to respond immediately.

On a different note, however, I do know of one couple that met in an AOL chat room, never realizing their geographical and work proximity. They had been friends quite separately on the 'net and in person; it was a stray phrase that linked the identification. They are together now and rejoicing in happiness, having helped each other through all sorts of rough times on the 'net, never knowing. They know each other so much better from the 'net conversations than some couples ever get to know each other.
