Asia Q3 personal computer shipments at record-IDC SINGAPORE, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Third quarter shipments of personal computers in the Asia-Pacific region hit a record high, shaking off ideas that year-end jitters would affect the market, International Data Corporation (IDC) said on Monday. Asia-Pacific shipments (excluding Japan) rose 5.1 percent on quarter and 41.3 percent year-on-year to a record 3.68 million units. IDC, a market research firm, said the annual growth rate in the quarter was the highest in almost four years. ''Some vendors were concerned that PC acquisitions would stall in the second of 1999 due to a spending lock-down caused by the Y2K issue, but a major commercial spending freeze failed to materialise,'' IDC said. The firm said there could be greater impact in the fourth quarter, particularly in the major business and government sectors, but strong buying elsewhere would offset it. All countries generated shipment growth on year in the quarter, ranging from 10.3 percent in New Zealand to 331.6 percent in Indonesia. China was the region's largest market in the third quarter, accounting for 37.1 percent of market share, IDC said. Korea, Australia, India and Taiwan were the next four largest markets, with annual Korean shipments growing by 70.2 percent in the quarter. Taiwan posted 44.6 percent annual shipment growth in the quarter, but shipments fell 23.6 percent from second quarter levels due to completion of an education tender, IDC said. The major earthquake in September did not affect Taiwan's performance in the quarter, but IDC said it did expect some impact on fourth quarter shipments.
