B: Sony Launches First Peripheral for Internet Music Extending the VAIO World Personal Entertainment Experience; VAIO Music Clip Holds Up to 120-Minutes of Secure Digital Music

LAS VEGAS, Nov 15, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Sony Electronics (COMDEX
Booth L5132) today introduced the VAIO(R) Music Clip(TM)(MC-P10), a
personal network player that provides consumers with the ability to
store and play secure digital music content downloaded from the
Internet or transferred from an audio CD. The Music Clip player extends
digital audio entertainment and the rapidly expanding world of Internet
music to Sony's VAIO PCs.

The Music Clip player comes equipped with 64MB of built-in flash memory
and holds up to 120 minutes of music files when they are stored in
ATRAC3 66kbps. This small, yet full-featured device plugs seamlessly
into most any VAIO desktop or notebook PC via a universal serial bus
(USB) port for high-speed music file transfer and downloads an hour of
music in approximately three minutes.

"We see the VAIO PC as a platform for personal networking that will
work seamlessly with key products and technologies like the VAIO Music
Clip player and the Memory Stick Walkman(TM) personal stereo," said Ken
Omae, senior vice president of PC marketing for Sony's Personal Network
Solutions Company (PNSC). "Sony's VAIO Music Clip player offers
consumers versatility, by allowing them to sit in front of a PC at a
favorite music site one minute, and a few minutes later, to be
listening to a personally-created mix of music to fit whatever their
taste."

The Music Clip player, available in black and metallic silver like
Sony's popular VAIO 505 notebook series, comes housed within a sleek
cylindrical form factor that measures 4.69-inches (w) x .91-inches (h)
x .88-inches (d) and weighs less than 1.68-ounces, including the power
source. This small entertainment device is as compact as a dry erase
pen and provides approximately five hours of continuous playback from
the single AA alkaline battery, making it easy to handle and take
on-the-go.

From PC and online music enthusiasts to college students, the unit
offers fast and easy, secure music downloads. Because there are no
moving parts, the unit is ideal for even the most active person. The
audio device is simple to use and features an easy-to-read back-lit LCD
display, and a built-in equalizer with three memory pre-sets (Rock, Pop
and Jazz) for optimal acoustic balance.

The Music Clip player comes bundled with Sony exclusive OpenMG Jukebox
music management software, enabling consumers to easily capture and
collect their favorite music from the Internet, record from CDs, create
their own digital music collections and transfer content to and from
the player. The VAIO Music Clip comes with decoding capability of
ATRAC3 and MP3 music files, moreover, it can be enabled to decode files
compressed in other audio codec technologies like "Windows(R) Media
Audio," by downloading appropriate decoding software to the product
when it becomes ready.

The entertainment device is SDMI-compliant (Secure Digital Music
Initiative), for secure digital music downloads. SDMI is a global
specification for secure digital music distribution created by a forum
of over 135 major music, consumer electronic and technology companies.

Sony's VAIO Music Clip personal network player (MC-P10) will be
available in January 2000 through select resellers or online at the

Supertracks Licenses Leading Technologies From Preview Systems and Lucent for Use in Complete Music Download System

New Supertracks Solution Features Intel(R) Software Integrity System

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Supertracks, a new company founded by music industry professionals and pioneers in the field of electronic distribution, today announced agreements with two leading technology companies that will provide key components for its complete system for digital distribution of music (DDM).

Supertracks is the first company to license and pilot the digital music distribution solution from Preview Systems, a leader in digital goods e-commerce network solutions. Preview's solution integrates Intel(R) Software Integrity System into Preview's proven and powerful ecommerce engine. Additionally, Supertracks announced it has licensed the use of the highly-regarded ePAC compression/de-compression algorithm (CODEC) from Lucent Technologies.

Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Supertracks is led by CEO Charles Jennings. The company's Chief Music Officer is Rick Riccobono, former Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, of music performing rights organization BMI.

"Preview's DDM solution, with embedded Intel content protection technology, gives Supertracks a proven system for e-commerce, security, and rights management," said Charles Jennings. "We are extremely pleased to have this technology, along with Lucent's ePAC CODEC, become a part of the Supertracks solution."

Proven solutions for digital commerce, rights management

Preview Systems is a provider of e-commerce solutions for the distribution and licensing of digital goods. Current customers include Symantec, Ingram Micro and Sony Marketing of Japan. Preview's digital goods e-commerce network has been expanding to over ten countries, offering real-time secure distribution and licensing of digital goods with support for 14 languages.

"With its extensive knowledge of both the Preview technology and of the music industry, Supertracks is poised to successfully use our solution to bring a new way of distributing and licensing music securely over the Internet," said Frank Tycksen, Vice President and co-founder of Preview Systems.

The Intel Software Integrity System is distinguished by Intel's patented tamper-resistant software technology as well as its ability to provide persistent and renewable content protection for artists and record labels in a variety of commerce models.

"Supertracks' experienced management team includes both music industry and technology professionals, so we're pleased that Intel Software Integrity System will be part of their solution for secure distribution of music," said Parvinder S. Kohli, general manager of Intel Internet Security Services.

ePAC gaining wide acceptance

The ePAC CODEC, developed by audio researchers at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs, is highly regarded by the industry and is gaining wide acceptance.

"The partnership was a natural fit, since both Supertracks and Lucent are working to create secure and viable solutions for the digital distribution of music," said Joyce Eastman, Vice President of Audio Initiatives at Lucent Technologies. "Each company brings this offering a valuable core competency. ePAC allows artists and labels to know consumers are enjoying their music at a fidelity equal to that of CD and that their music is always secured to deter piracy."
