Deal Marks First Major Carrier Deal for Excite@Home

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Excite@Home ATHM and AT&T T , today announced a memorandum of understanding to give AT&T PocketNet subscribers wireless access to their personalized Excite content. AT&T PocketNet(R) service subscribers will have wireless access to Excite personalized content delivered over the AT&T Wireless IP Network (CDPD) to their AT&T PocketNet enabled devices. The companies expect to finalize their agreement by December 31, 1999 and make the services available in Q1, 2000.

To get Excite content, PocketNet subscribers simply scroll through their PocketNet menu and select Excite. After selecting a topic or header, the most updated and current information on the Excite service is immediately viewed on the PocketNet subscribers handset. If the user has registered with Excite, they can view their personalized portfolio, including news, weather, sports and horoscope on their phone as well. The user will also be able to access their favorite Excite content, including:

-- Excite Planner - Users will have direct access to their calendar,
address book, to do, and notepad data, and be notified on the phone of
selected calendar events.
-- Excite Mail - Users can get an alert when a new message has arrived,
with the ability to download and read the message on their phone. Users
can also read, reply, file, delete or compose new messages on their
phone.
-- Lottery results - Lottery results, by state, will be delivered to the
user on their phone if requested.
-- Personalized stock quotes - Consumers can access their personalized
portfolio of stocks on the phone.
-- Local weather - Local weather, by zip code, along with a 5-day
forecast, can be accessed via the phone.
-- Personalized news - Consumers can receive personalized and headline
news on the phone.
-- Personalized sports scores - Consumers can access sports headlines and
scores for favorite teams on the phone.
-- Local movie show times - Local movie listings, by zip code, can be
accessed on the phone.
-- Daily horoscopes - Users can get daily personal horoscope on their
phone.

They need power over programming to dip their beaks in the e-commerce and advertising revenue. Renting pipe is a very "manufacturing-type" business model, which is OK, but they still have that gigantic overhead.

And ownership in companies that provide content/programming can't work if they maintain a more 'silent' interest, and watch the threshold of ownership limits? It seems this is a section of the ice they are testing.
