got this answer, bill --->

virtually all subs on the market today are powered, not necessarily because it's better, that's just what the market likes (keep in mind that the market likes Bose speakers as well). most preamps have more than one set of outputs; if not, just use a high quality "y" adaptor. of the few passive subs i've seen, almost all would have a built-in crossover. this would mean that you would run from the amp to the sub and then out to the "satellite" speakers. the only question would be whether the crossover would serve as a high pass to the satellites or not. many are simply low pass to the woofer. for audio i would prefer passive, but i would also be willing to bet that his dunlavy speakers will sound better without. sure, they probably won't reproduce the bottom octave, but the chances that they will jive with a subwoofer not specifically designed for them are very poor. to the extent that the frequency response of the sub and the speakers overlap, you will get cancellation/reinforcement depending on speaker placement and listening position. sometimes moving your listening position a foot or so will produce drastically different audio results. this is possible with just a pair of speakers, but a lot less likely. i'm not an anti-sub kinda guy; i think they're great for home theater. and i've got that little passive cerwin vega sub upstairs for audio, but if you recall the layout of the room, it's a huge volume to expect a couple of 8 inch drivers to fill.

also emailed it to you in case you want to discuss it with the guy.
