>>But stephen was saying something totally different. He was saying Intel like for AMD to be around and does not want to put it out of business because it then will be a monopoly like MSFT and it will have similar problem.
Intel allows AMD to survive to avoid the same type of monopoly problems that MSFT's going through.
That statement is laughable<<

Apparently my post wasn't clear. Steve's statement was not laughable for the exact reasons you acknowledge to be true, namely that AMD's demise would leave Intel in a situation exactly analogous to Microsoft's in the OS arena. How is this laughable? It is a sound and reasonable position take. AMD's demise would be bad news for Intel. Intel wants AMD to be weak but potentially formidable, in other words, exactly where it is right now. If I understand Steve's post correctly, that is all he is saying: (1) Intel COULD squash AMD (you agree), and (2) it is not in its interest to do so.

Re: "This statement is laughable"

I believe the statement has merit and a case can be made for it. You have not presented any case against it. Intel could drive AMD out of business and still sell it's products at a profit. It would hurt in the short term but help in the long term. Why do you think they haven't?
