QLogic {QLGC} has been bringing in the green by eschewing its skuzzy roots and putting more fibre in its diet.

Mind you, being skuzzy is just a cute word for small computer system interface (SCSI), a networking standard that allows up to 15 peripheral devices to be linked to a computer.

QLogic Corp. is one of CNBC.com's Top Stocks of 1999 QLogic has seen a nearly 400 percent jump in its stock this year because it has embraced a new technology called fibre channel that allows more devices to be connected to a computer from longer distances, running at faster speeds.

There may be cause for all this hullabaloo. Fibre channel technology sales are seen growing to $15 billion in 2002 from $2 billion in 1998, according to International Data Corp. a Framingham, Mass.-based market research firm. In that time frame, IDC sees fibre making up 60 percent of storage connections from 20 percent this year.
