Dave, the price difference between a Micron Sdram system and the Dell RDRAM system is about 28%. The question will be does the Dell system offer more than 28% performance improvement - otherwise the RDRAM camp needs to pull a pretty neat marketing trick to get these systems moving short to mid-term.

Micron Millenia 500Mhz 128MB SDRAM 13.6 Gig HD DVD $1869
Dell XPS B 533Mhz 128MB RDRAM 13.6 Gig HD DVD $2407

Will the somewhat better processor and RDRAM make a 28% difference. We'll see when performance comparisons start to flood the mags and sites. Rich

Dave:
COMDEX trade show has been open for 2 hours now and stock is down 4 pts. It looks like not enough RDRAM here, there and everywhere on show floor to get people to buy stock. Intel press release indicates another 30 days for 820 mobos. Covered call looking a little better now than 3 hours ago. Has Micron incited FUD with DDR yet.

Intel Introduces New Chipset for Intel Pentium III Processor-based Performance PCs; Intel 820 Chipset Features Direct RDRAM Memory Technology and AGP 4X Graphics Capabilities
BUSINESS WIRE - November 15, 1999 11:03
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov 15, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Intel Corporation today introduced a new chipset that optimizes the performance of Intel(R) Pentium(R) III processor-based PCs targeted at the performance desktop market segment.

The Intel(R) 820 Chipset brings new features and capabilities to PC users including a faster processor system bus, superior memory capabilities and enhanced graphics functionality. The Intel 820 Chipset is the first desktop chipset to enable high-performance Direct RDRAM(1) memory technology and deliver significant graphics performance enhancements through AGP 4x graphics support.

"The Intel 820 Chipset is designed from the ground up to take advantage of the power in the fastest Intel Pentium III processors, providing the highest performance in video, graphics and multimedia both on and off the Internet," said Louis Burns, vice president and general manager of Intel's Platform Components Group. "With its enhanced features and significant increase in bandwidth for current and emerging applications, the Intel 820 Chipset provides the greatest available performance, flexibility and longevity of any desktop chipset."

Superior Memory and Graphics Performance

The Intel 820 Chipset supports Direct RDRAM memory technology and AGP 4x graphics support. Direct RDRAM memory provides the memory bandwidth necessary to obtain optimal performance from the fastest Intel Pentium III processors, delivering 1.6 GB/sec of maximum theoretical memory bandwidth -- twice the peak memory bandwidth of 100-MHz SDRAM systems. Additionally, when used in conjunction with the Intel Pentium III processor and Direct RDRAM memory, AGP 4x technology delivers the next level of 3-D graphics performance by allowing graphics controllers to access main memory at more than 1 GB/sec -- twice that of previous AGP platforms. The result is a platform that delivers dramatically richer graphics and multimedia content in today's applications and will easily accommodate future advances in both software and hardware technology.

Intel(R) Accelerated Hub Architecture: Bandwidth for Future

The Intel 820 Chipset delivers Intel(R) Accelerated Hub Architecture that is offered in all Intel 800 series chipsets. This revolutionary chipset architecture provides twice the bandwidth of the PCI bus at 266 MB/sec and consists of a Memory Controller Hub, an I/O Controller Hub and a Firmware Hub.

The Memory Controller Hub provides a high-performance interface for the central processing unit, memory and the accelerated graphics port and supports single or dual processors with up to 1 GB of memory. The I/O Controller Hub forms a direct connection from the Memory Controller Hub to the integrated AC97 controller, the ATA66 drive controller, dual USB ports and PCI add-in cards.

The I/O Controller Hub also includes an Alert on LAN(1) feature that allows a non-booting system to send a status update to the network administrator even when the microprocessor is not present. The Firmware Hub stores system and video BIOS and features the Intel(R) Random Number Generator. Intel's Random Number Generator provides hardware that generates truly random numbers through the use of thermal noise to enable stronger encryption, digital signing and security protocols.

All major OEMs are expected to have systems based on the Intel 820 Chipset shipping within the next 30 days. The Intel 820 Chipset is priced at $42.50 in 10,000-unit quantities.

Introducing Two New Motherboards

Intel is also introducing two new PC desktop boards that incorporate the new Intel 820 Chipset. The Intel VC820 desktop board supports the Intel 820 Chipset with up to 512 MB of RDRAM, while the Intel CC820 board combines the Intel 820 chipset with up to 512 MB of SDRAM. Both VC820 and CC820 boards support Intel Pentium III and Pentium II processors and feature Instantly Available PC (Suspend To RAM) power management, LANDesk(R) Client Manager hardware monitoring, audio/modem riser (AMR) support, Norton AntiVirus(1) 5.0 and Internet utilities software and optional Creative Labs(1) Soundblaster(1) audio in ATX form factor. Systems using these motherboards are expected to reach the market within the next 30 days. The VC820 and CC820 desktop boards will also be available through Intel's dealer channel.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
