Can't speak to the current degree to which this practice is still being employed, but last year, I posted a few comments on this topic, including the infamous Ziff Davis ad scam which totaled multi-millions of dollars.
It wouldn't surprise me if the boys had expanded the game, as most ad agencies think net ads are close to worthless

Gene, this scam has been around for awhile. As Barnum said, as long as investors pay good money to see "The Egress," you can expect the internut scamsters to keep coming up with pretend revenues and profits. That is why the keys to these cos. are the balance sheets which NEVER have free cash flow. FCF requires actual sales in real dollars, among other things that the Internuts have little of.
