In fact for years globes (remember those)? they listed Grass Valley and not Los Angeles...

Grass Valley used to be the gold mining capital of california, The Empire Mine (now a park) was a longtime producing gold mine that made the population in the 1850's much greater than los angeles. I've hiked the park and many other gold mine sites in that area.

Its a beautiful place to visit.
