Compaq/Digital is going to integrate the memory controller onto the processor die of their next-generation 21364 (EV7) processor. Each processor will have four RDRAM channels coming out of it. So in a four-way server, you'll have sixteen channels of memory bandwidth total. And thanks to the elimination of the north bridge, local memory accesses will be very low in latency. Grafting quad DDR channels onto the processor gets way too tough, even for Alpha.
