Jim - So then answer this... why does AMD use 3DNOW on their 3D benchmarks? Are they worried? Why don't they just use scaler code for the Athlon and not resort to this foolish SIMD stuff that Intel so desparately needs.

Fact - 3DWinbench and 3DMark both MAKE USE OF SIMD EXTENSIONS - for both companies if the chip supports either SIMD extension.

If Intel wins some 3D benchmarks, that means that their effective FP capability is better than AMD's. If the can be computed in SIMD fashion (as in the case of 3D graphics), then that contributes to the overall FP capability of the chip. Scalar FP is not the only FP on each of the chips.
