DELL: Dell raises performance bar with fastest-ever Dell Precision workstations

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15 1999 5:43 PM EST

NOV 15, 1999, M2 Communications - Dell(tm) Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems company*, today announced the Dell Precision(tm) 420, the fastest workstation ever available from Dell.

Incorporating single or dual Intel Pentium III processors at either 733 or 600 MHz and the Intel 840 chipset with 133 MHz front-side bus, the Dell Precision 420 can be built-to-order for customers who design, develop, or create using the industry's most demanding applications.

The Dell Precision 420 introduces a number of performance and bandwidth-enhancing technologies into the workstation line including dual channel Rambus memory, Ultra 160/M SCSI hard drives, AGP Pro graphics, and new faster graphics cards. These new technologies provide the Precision 420 with the power and bandwidth to offer exceptional performance.

"The Dell Precision 420 is our most powerful system ever, offering great value for users needing workstation-class performance for high-end applications," said Jim McMahon, Workstation Marketing Manager, Dell UK & Ireland. "These new options, when combined with Dell's direct customer relationships, leadership and stability, make Dell the premier choice for workstation customers."

Additional new features of the Dell Precision 420 include:

* QuietCase(tm) technology: Dell specially designed the system chassis with a hard drive case that reduces the noise levels associated with today's fast 10,000 RPM hard disk drives. This results in a quieter overall system.

* Large storage capacity-up to four hard drives: Because Dell Precision workstations are used by professionals working with high-end applications and large amounts of data, this system provides up to 108 GB of storage.

* "Inside the cover" documentation: Dell has attached critical charts and diagrams to the inside chassis cover to enable easier reference for troubleshooting and installing additional system components.

* Intense 3D(tm) Wildcat(tm) 4110 Pro high-end graphics: Providing 128 MB of memory and compatibility with the Dell Precision 420's AGP 4X Pro graphics, the Wildcat 4110 Pro is one of the most powerful OpenGL graphics accelerators on the market. It features more than 3 GFLOPS of geometry processing power and a rasterization engine capable of 110 million pixels (trilinear textured, z-buffered, Gouraud-shaded) per second.

* Ultra 160/M SCSI, with 64 MB RAID option: The next-generation SCSI technology used by Dell Precision allows faster data transfer within the system, and an optional RAIDport card provides increased data protection (when in mirroring mode) and performance (when in striping mode).

Priced beginning at UKGBP1,725, the Dell Precision 420 is available for order today and can be configured to user specifications with support for up to 2 GB of RDRAM memory and a choice of graphics cards for exceptional 2D, OpenGL 3D and multi-monitor graphics performance.

The Precision 420 is Dell's mid-range system, offering scalable performance and outstanding value. It is designed with features normally associated with high-end workstations to provide the power needed for demanding applications. The Precision 420 is the personalised workstation with exceptional performance.

Dell Precision 220 workstation Also announced today is the Dell Precision 220 workstation incorporating single or dual Intel Pentium III processors at 733, 667 or 533 MHz and the Intel 820 chipset with 133 MHz front-side bus. Priced from UKGBP1,227, the Precision 220 can be configured to user specifications including storage up to 72GB, Rambus memory up to 512 MB, and a choice of graphics cards for exceptional 2D, OpenGL 3D and multi-monitor graphics performance.

The Precision 220 is Dell's value system, offering workstation performance at PC prices. It is designed to provide great performance and the latest technologies, built to our user's exact specifications. Finally, users can obtain the cost-effective workstation productivity they demand today, with performance headroom for tomorrow.

Ranked No. 78 among the Fortune 500 companies and No. 210 in the Fortune Global 500(tm), Dell Computer Corporation is the world's leading direct computer systems company, based on revenue of $23.6 billion for the past four quarters. INTCfan...Re Soros Buying some DELL......( From the QCOM thread)
Here is a quote from George Soros:

"When you are confused it is best to do nothing. You are just going
for a random walk and that is when you are liable to get mugged
because you do not have staying power. You are likely to be faked
out by some stray fluctuation because you lack the courage of your
convictions. The market always destroys the weak - that is, investors
who do not have well-founded convictions. You need some convictions
to avoid getting faked out, but having the courage of your convictions
could get you wiped out if your convictions are false. So I prefer to
take a stand only when I have well-founded convictions."

Re: Soros and Dell
That sounds good. Dell + Vrts, Jnpr, Sunw, Msft, Qcom.
I would add Aol and sit on it for a year,be very hard to beat.
Don't know parametric, tho, and I probably made mistake in selling jnpr today- forgot it was in his list.
Magellan fund ($87 bil) reduced their tech stock holdings this spring which turned out to be costly. That may have been a
a small part of the techs early problems. That is, if Magellan was sellin, perhaps the idea carried over to other funds.
And the result seemed to be forces from the dark side
dumping the the techs more or less indiscriminately regardless of
their individual performance.
Now the tide has turned and it seems that G. Soros ideas
are catching on (jnpr up 45, aol +7, vrts+11, sunw+7).
The Pied Piper?
