Jim, another thing, if people believe that something is happening that they can not control, they could easily go into "panic mode" and anarchy could spill out into the streets. If electric power is cut off, even for only 12-24 hours, there is a good chance for panic. If there is a shortage of food on the shelves, it could get out of hand very quickly. I believe if every one could keep their head, there will be no major problems.

James Reiher, for Y2K, I think people should be prepared to be without power for a little while. Even if it doesn't happen, having some canned foods, a manual opener, of course, a propane grill, or some other way to heat and cook food. Gas up your cars in case the pumps fail. Have plenty of blankets and fire wood if you live where it's cold. And save all statements from banks, and any other documentation of bills paid, money you owe, etc. in other words CYA (Cover your a**) in accountant lingo. Enough cash for a couple of weeks. I don't think you need to panic and pull every cent you have out of the bank.

As I'm writing this I'm realizing even more just how dependent we are on modern conveniences. Concerning the stock market, I think many people are on hold, so to speak, until after Y2K. I think the market will be very unstable in January, but things will level off after that.
