Research In Motion to provide wireless E-mail Research In Motion Ltd RIM Shares issued 62,165,317 Nov 15 close $69.50 Tue 16 Nov 99 News Release Mr. Mark Guibert reports Research In Motion has signed an agreement with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher (GD&C) to supply the BlackBerry wireless E-mail solution to over 500 lawyers and administrative staff in the firm's 10 offices in the United States. GD&C plans to initially deploy 500 BlackBerry Handhelds and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The BlackBerry solution provides GD&C professionals with secure, mobile access to their corporate E-mail, contacts, calendar and task list and helps them maintain their high standards of service. "Responsiveness is critical to our success. When clients retain an elite law firm like GD&C, they expect easy and constant access to our lawyers, particularly during a crisis," said Adam Bendell, technology counsel and chair of the technology committee for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. "With BlackBerry, even when our lawyers are travelling or otherwise out of their offices, they can be in touch with their clients. We also use BlackBerry to stay in touch from depositions and court rooms where cell phones aren't an option." "Lawyers, as well as other professionals, increasingly depend on E-mail for communication. As with most corporate environments, E-mail security is a major concern," said Mark Guibert, director of marketing for Research In Motion. "Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is now able to access confidential E-mail wirelessly through BlackBerry, which incorporates an advanced security model using Triple DES encryption technology. With this security design, all E-mail is encrypted behind the company's firewall before it is sent to the wireless hand-held." TechLaw Inc., an authorized BlackBerry solution provider, is working closely with RIM and GD&C to support the deployment of BlackBerry Handhelds and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. TechLaw provides information technology services, information management and information research and analytical services nationwide to legal practices and government agencies. RIM's BlackBerry solution includes a powerful wireless hand-held with integrated E-mail/organizer software, PC docking cradle, innovative desktop and server software, single mailbox integration with Microsoft Exchange and flat-rate nationwide air time. It features an end-to-end security system whereby all corporate E-mail remains encrypted at all points between the desktop PC and the BlackBerry Handheld, meeting standard corporate security guidelines. The push model of E-mail delivery that BlackBerry provides does not require the user to dial-in or initiate the connection, so users receive notification as a new E-mail arrives and can respond immediately. BlackBerry Enterprise Server allows centralized administration, increased scalability, enhanced performance as well as improved support for laptops.
