Cabletron Strengthens Leading Position in Convergence Marketplace Through Unique Portfolio of `Voice-Ready' Equipment
SmartSwitch Router, SmartSwitches and SmartVoice Gateway Combine to Provide Users with Industry's First End-to-End Voice and Data Infrastructure
ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1999-- Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today strengthened its leading position within the convergence marketplace by outlining its end-to-end portfolio of ``voice-ready' products that provide users with a reliable and secure infrastructure for both voice and data communications transmission.

By utilizing its leading-edge, Layer 4 Quality of Service (QoS) and bandwidth monitoring capabilities, Cabletron is already providing thousands of customers world-wide with the ability to support high-quality voice calls over existing data communications equipment, providing the potential to significantly reduce network ownership costs and to save as much as 70 percent on long-distance phone bills.

Growth opportunity in the IP telephony market is particularly significant, with research consultants Killen & Associates predicting that, by 2002, 35% of all domestic telephone calls with be made over IP networks.

Ray Wright, Cabletron's director of convergence marketing commented, ``Take-up of packet voice technology will truly accelerate if it provides high-quality voice calls, significant cost reductions and, ultimately, can be achieved easily without replacing existing data communications equipment. This is true for both enterprise customers looking to reduce long-distance phone tariffs, and for service providers who, in turn, are looking to offer cheaper telephony services and expand their offerings.'

Combining its industry-leading Layer 4 SmartSwitch Router (SSR), SmartSwitches and SmartVoice Gateway, Cabletron seamlessly transports voice and data traffic from users' desktops to remote sites and branch offices. Traffic prioritization, QoS, bandwidth monitoring, accounting, policy and voice management are deliverable end-to-end -- an industry first that may revolutionize packet voice adoption.

Cabletron first announced in May its extension of Layer 3 and 4 technologies to the SmartSwitch product family. This move provided customers with router-like application control within a Layer 2 switch, spanning from data center to wiring closet environments.

Cabletron provides effective voice-management solutions with SPECTRUM. SPECTRUM Telephony Management Solutions allow customers to streamline internal resources by deploying one management application to view, manage and control both data and voice traffic. Furthermore, customers can utilize SPECTRUM to determine Service Level Agreements (SLA), allowing IT functions to be mapped to true business goals and objectives.

``Cabletron's voice-ready networking capabilities place us in a unique position to provide high-quality voice and video over IP networks. With wire-speed routing, QoS and prioritization, leading gateway functionality and comprehensive management, we can deliver today on the promise of converged IP networks,' added Wright.

Current Cabletron customers who have chosen to deploy the company's communications infrastructure for future convergence applications include National Magazines in the UK and Daewoo Telecoms in Korea.
