Don't you think acquaintances, even perfectly nice people, would be unlikely to feel free enough to come up and say, "Are you a cheat and a crook like Joe says you are?" My guess is that they would assume that the one who came forward with an account of what happened was telling the truth if the other didn't defend himself. You're being pretty strict, Ish! I mean, you're giving them all a "test," in effect, aren't you? A sort of "loyalty test"? People usually take the path of least resistance, is my experience. Sounds a little like the other guy made it easy to believe him, and you offered no resistance to that outcome. Of course if you were really close to these people, then loyalty might be a fair thing to expect even if they don't know the true story. Has your wife ever tried to set them straight at the church? (If she goes there, too.) Maybe you just don't give a damn, though.... Was this all a long time ago now?
