I agree with your definition of "core" and like the moving average approach as a way to smooth out the volatility too.
The only problem is that 5 minutes is the long term on Wall St. A lot of traders look at every single report like it has a ton of significance. So if I was suffering from the same mental illness I would try to analyze the numbers minus the more volatile ones too. (g)
