GraphOn Corp. Acquires Technology Patent forRemoting Windows Applications to UNIX and Linux

November 16, 1999 09:22 AM
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1999--GraphOn Corporation GOJO (www.graphon.com), specializing in thin, server-based software that instantly web-enables applications today announced it has acquired a U.S. patent for the remote display of Microsoft Windows applications on UNIX(R) and Linux(R) desktops with X Windows(R).

As a result, GraphOn has patent protection and licensing rights for the deployment of all Windows applications remoted, or displayed, over a network or any other type of connection to any X Window system. The patent includes GraphOn's WinBridge(TM) (formerly jBridge) technology that enables multi-platform access of 32-bit Windows applications over the Internet. The technology covered by the patent was originally developed by a team of engineers formerly with Exodus Technology and hired by GraphOn in May of 1998.

Linux and UNIX applications cannot run on Windows. GraphOn's patented technology overcomes this limitation by allowing UNIX and Linux-based computers and display devices to view and run Windows-based applications remotely and unchanged.

"This patent deals with technology that is fundamental to server-based access of Windows applications from UNIX and Linux desktops. It provides cross-platform access to business-critical applications by organizations that may be UNIX or Linux-based, but use Windows applications, as well," said GraphOn president and CEO, Walt Keller. "In addition, this acquisition provides an excellent opportunity for GraphOn to license the patent to independent software vendors and other businesses."

Editor's note: GraphOn is exhibiting at COMDEX/Fall '99 all week in the Microsoft Partner Pavilion booth No. 121 in L5142 and in the Linux Business Expo in Corel's booth No. 602, and through Thursday at the media-only Lunch@Piero's event at 355 Convention Center Drive.
