Corel Offers eFax Services With Corel LINUX OS Deluxe

MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1999--

eFax.com Provides Special '20 Page Free' Sending Promotion for Online and Retail Distribution

eFax.com(TM) (NASDAQ:EFAX), the world's leading Internet provider of fax-to-email services, today announced a distribution partnership with Corel(R) Corporation (NASDAQ: CORL) to offer its eFax(R) Free service and a trial for sending faxes with every Corel LINUX(R) OS Deluxe version software package.

This alliance extends eFax.com's reach into small businesses and home offices (SOHO) through online and traditional retail distribution.

In addition to helping generate eFax brand awareness, this agreement aids in the incremental expansion of the eFax.com subscriber-base. Offered throughout the U.S. and Canada, the eFax "20 Page Free" promotion will initially be made available to tens of thousands of users via retail distribution and to thousands more users via the Internet. eFax.com has amassed more than 1.4 million subscribers since its launch in February of this year.

"Our Corel LINUX OS Deluxe software, coupled with the bundled eFax promotional service offering, has helped to enhance the functionality and overall value of our distribution. It also supports our goal of bringing the power of Linux to the desktop," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation.

"Corel is an important brand for us to be working with," said Rudy Prince, president and CEO of eFax.com. "They have broad distribution to help us extend the reach of our brand. Importantly, they are helping us move further into the Linux community with their LINUX OS Deluxe software."

What Corel LINUX OS Deluxe Users Get

The agreement between Corel and eFax.com provides Corel LINUX OS Deluxe users with the eFax Free fax-to-email service and 20-pages of FREE fax sending using a trial of the eFax service. An icon in the form of the eFax.com "swirl" resides on the bundle CD distributed with retail and web versions of the Corel LINUX OS Deluxe software. After loading the CD, Corel Linux users simply click on the eFax.com swirl icon and they are linked to an eFax.com co-branded website, at which point they are given the option to sign-up for their FREE eFax number. At this point, the user simply follows the prompts and their FREE eFax number is assigned within minutes.

Corel Responds To DigArts Software Statement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--In response to a press release issued today by DigArts Software, Corel Corporation (NASDAQ: CORL, TSE: COR)
confirms that a lawsuit initiated against Corel by DigArts, and its owner Dennis Berkla, regarding Corel's use of DigArts' digitalartwork, has concluded.

In finding that Corel was liable for a breach of confidence and for breaching the terms of a non-disclosure agreement between the parties, a federal jury awarded the plaintiffs damages in the amount of US $23,500. In addition, Corel stipulated that the minor copyright infringement relating to a limited number of beta copies of software would result in damages of US $9,100.

"While we are disappointed with the jury's finding, we are pleasedthat the jury recognized the limited monetary impact resulting from these
actions. As a result, this final award will have no significant financial impact on Corel," stated Michael O'Reilly, executive vice president finance and chief financial officer of Corel Corporation.

Although the jury also found the plaintiffs eligible for an award of punitive damages, the trial judge had previously ruled that punitive damages could not be awarded in a case of this nature.

Corel, others preach open source for PCs
...OPEN WINDOWS?
Corel's move to stake out a growing portion of the desktop PC market has caused many at this trade show to wonder why Microsoft doesn't retaliate by either releasing its own version of Linux or opening up its Windows source code for outside development. Either move, observers say, would give Microsoft the capability to lower the development costs for its operating system software and compete for the business that Corel hopes to serve by embracing Linux...
