Qualcomm Riding a Powerful Rocket (QCOM)
Tuesday, November 16, 1999
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

November 16, 1999 -- Stock in wireless leader Qualcomm (QCOM) has been "virtually immune to market forces" since December 1998, says top growth advisor Jim Collins. Qualcomm is one of 13 stocks Collins recommended recently as "appropriate for the aggressive trader." Collins' advice was prescient, since Qualcomm rocketed to $368 as of November 15 after starting the month near $210. All the more stunning when considering the company rose from a 52-week low below $25.
Qualcomm's most recent blastoff came after the company announced that Q4 profits tripled to $170 million, $0.91 per diluted share, while Wall Street had predicted $0.88. Shortly after, an analyst issued a rave review of Qualcomm and said the wireless industry can look forward to a clear and rosy future. Management added fuel to the fire by announcing a four-for-one stock split.

Qualcomm is the number one provider of digital wireless communications products, technologies and services. The firm is also number two in digital cellular phones, and it also makes the popular Eudora email software. Qualcomm's CDMA (code division multiple access) technology is the industry standard for cellular, PCS and wireless local loop networks, and other wireless services. The company earns royalties by licensing its CDMA technology to telecom equipment suppliers. Qualcomm also runs a satellite-based mobile communications and position reporting system, and it is developing a low-to-Earth satellite communications system. Collins holds positions in Qualcomm in all of his model portfolios.
