Something like envy, yes, although I suspect more extensive than we commonly mean by the term. Status is to some extent tied up in consumption, if only as a display of success or show of sophistication. The meaning of being poor is different in different contexts, and does not always imply failure. Also, one is sold products like anyone else in this society, only without the means to buy them. In Peru, they know there is greater abundance elsewhere, but it is somewhat unreal, like El Dorado.......
