Since March 1991 - the beginning of the expansion - the Dow Jones industrial average has risen from around 2900 to above 10,700 at the end of October. It took the Dow almost 95 years to rise to 2900, but just eight more to get to its current level.

In 1990, U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) was $5.8 trillion. By 1994, it had grown to $7.1 trillion and in 1998 it was $8.8 trillion. Much of that increase is due to the wild growth of stock markets....
