HOTT..buy trigger 39.75 traded at 47 this morning rose on a bullish gap up although it was called yesterday on a few occasions. My opinion is that 25% or a little more of earnings plays can be held through earnings but they must be paid very close attention to any news that might come out in the 1-2 weeks before earnings, and nothing takes the place of experience and trading the same stocks season after season. The longer you play the earnings, the more profitable opportunities you will experience. You have to have experienced a lot of earnings seasons and know the risks especially if the stock is trading at a new high (signal usually for disaster). Stocks like DELL and MSFT are more dangerous because whole technology will move up or down in correlation to these stocks but stocks like HOTT, NTAP, or ANN will usually have no or little effect on any sector not even the others in their own own industry. I'm working up a tentative strategy for shorting the earnings plays that move above or spike up disproportionately DIRECTLY AS A RESULT of the earning report.. or conversely a company that is showing negative anticipation BEFORE the reports, "puts" might be considered the way to go (but not very high profile stocks like QCOM learned from experience <g>) or best just ride out the report and play the gap up or down, either way there are excellent profits that could be made with the right risk management and strategies. But you can find opportunities if you are cautious. Sometimes the rewards are greater than the risks, but usually in stocks trading 10% or or more below their 52 week high.
