That means you cannot blindly "Buy-and-Hold".

Your theory may be correct for MSFT but it does not apply to LU. Data communications is in it's infancy and new applications will drive bandwidth demand to new highs forever. Yesterday video images. Today audio. Tomorrow TV quality video+audio. Increasing bandwidth demand will never cease.

Your theory is not as universal as you imply. Especially concerning LU.

You left out the tax consequences. I can't afford to sell my Lucent. Especially to place a bet on the next whiz.com. As we get older, the stability of Lucent makes a nice retirement nest egg. You seem to assume that risky growth stocks will always be the optimum investment and we will never age. BTW there is a small dividend that you don't mention.
