American Power Conversion Expands Smart-UPS(R) Rack-mount Line with More Compact, Feature-rich Model

New 2U solution offers enhanced features at lower price

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (Nasdaq: APCC) (APC) today announced enhancements to its award-winning Smart- UPS(R) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) line with the introduction of a smaller (3.5 inches high) rack-mount model that offer feature enhancements at a lower price. The new 2U Smart-UPS rack-mount UPS, available in 700VA, 1000VA, and 1400VA, addresses the ever-increasing demand for rack-enabled solutions fueled by the explosive growth of data, voice and Internet traffic and the need to conserve precious rack space in datacenter environments. In addition to consuming less rack space than current models, the new Smart-UPS rack-mount design offers simplified service and longer battery runtime while providing the same Legendary Reliability(TM) for which APC has become known.

"Our rack-mount Smart-UPS has long been an industry benchmark for reliable, manageable power protection for networking applications," said Ed Bednarcik, general manager of APC's Business Networks Group. "The fact that we have improved this solution by making it smaller and easier to service gives MIS managers a new standard of excellence for rack-based power protection."

Given that the new rack-mount Smart-UPS more efficiently utilizes the UPS's battery power, the 1000VA and 1400VA models provide on average 35 percent more battery runtime than APC's existing rack-mount UPSs. APC's Smart-UPS 2U provides a wider input voltage range which can maintain computer grade power even if the nominal voltage drops by 30 percent without the UPS switching to battery. APC has also simplified the battery removal and replacement process in all three VA models by integrating the batteries in a chassis tray with an easy accessible connector, enabling users to disconnect and replace the batteries without disturbing the connected load.

Additionally, when the battery is being disconnected for replacement, the testing feature is automatically disabled in the unit and notifications are broadcast via in and out of band notifications.

In addition to two-post mounting, the new Smart-UPS 2U unit now includes unique support rails for four-post mounting. This added support gives users the ability to transport the rack with a pre-installed UPS securely fastened inside without incurring additional rail kit costs.

All Smart-UPS rack-mount models include APC's award-winning PowerChute(R) plus power management software which gives network managers the ability to control their UPSs and safeguard data by executing an unattended secure shutdown during an extended power outage. In addition, APC's Smart-UPS family of UPSs can be managed by all major network management platforms including HP TopTools, IBM Netfinity Manager, Dell OpenView NNM SE, HP OpenView, Tivoli NetView, Intel LANDesk Server Manager, Siemens ServerView, CA Unicenter TNG, and Compaq Insight Manager.

The new Smart-UPS 2U will be available in North America in January 2000, in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and Latin America during the first quarter 2000, and in Asia Pacific during the second quarter 2000. Estimated resale pricing of the 700VA, 1000VA and 1400VA is $499, $659 and $849, respectively.
