Mon 22 Nov 99 News Release
Mr. J. Frank Callaghan reports
Following a five-year exploration and drilling program, the company has now
identified sufficient resources to enable an application to the provincial
and federal government to develop the Cariboo gold project, near Wells,
B.C.
The region is a historic gold mining area, dating back to the Cariboo Gold
Rush of over a century ago. The regional economy, based on forestry and
mining, has suffered declines in recent years.
The Cariboo gold project, is a proposed 3,000-ton-per-day open pit and
underground gold mining operation, with a projected capital cost of
$60-million. The mine will provide approximately 150 direct jobs. No new
major infrastructure is required.
The application, scheduled for submission in December of this year, will be
made under the B.C. Environmental Assessment Act. An important aspect of
the legislation is to provide for participation in assessments under the
act by the proponents, the public, first nations, municipalities and
regional districts, federal and provincial governments and their agencies,
and British Columbia's neighbouring jurisdictions.
Public open houses are scheduled for Wells, B.C., on Tuesday, Nov. 23, (7
p.m. to 9 p.m. at the community hall); Quesnel on Wednesday, Nov. 24, (6
p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Tower Inn); and Williams Lake on Thursday, Nov. 25,
(6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Overlander Hotel).
The purpose of the open houses is to obtain feedback from the public on the
location of the major components (mill and tailings impoundment), and the
design of the mine plan. Public response will aid design of the Cariboo
gold project to harmonize with the local environment and economy.
On submission of the application, the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office
will appoint a project committee with members from appropriate provincial
and federal agencies. The application is the first step in what is normally
a two-stage review. Further open houses and meetings with local stakeholder
groups will take place in the coming months.
The company is working closely with the local communities in garnering the
support and assistance of the public in the development of the Cariboo gold
project.
