why this would affect the chart pattern
Many people look at the stock movements graphicly. They have a chart of 1 minute intervals and look for dips and swings (especially frequent or day traders). They can have a bunch of these charts open at once and see shifts at a glance. If QCOM is varying by about 10 points in a minute or two, and someone get a trade recorded, even temporarily, that is 100 points wrong, the scale of the chart will change to show perhaps 150 points from top to bottom instead of the 15 points or so that are of real interest. While that chart is skewed all of the 3 or 5 point movements show up as just a horizontal line more or less. This can hide the movements of a player who is concentrating on one stock (like QCOM) from the army of day traders who might jump in and offset the trades, if they noticed.
