f.simons,>>>But it does seem that Intel's now-admitted inability to meet current demand for their high-end CuMines opens a window of opportunity for AMD's Athlon. Why can't we admit that?<<<

When you roll out complex new technology, stuff happens. On balance, Intel does a pretty good job in this category. As an investor, I don't have the time or the technical knowledge to micro manage (or micro inspect) everything that goes on.

But I am a investor and it is my money that I have to watch out for. If I think they are doing a lousy job, I will let them know about it, right or wrong (just ask John Hull).

There are people out there however, whose primary motivation may not be in watching out for their own interests, but rather have a psycological need to root against things, people, or concepts for complex psychological needs that I don't really need to find out anything more about - other than to know that what is being advocated, or which theory advanced, that is not what it appears to be on the surface.

The AMD competitive threat is an entirely separate subject - and we can go on about that perhaps at another time.

Regards,

Mary

f.simons: There is a small opportunity for Athlon but their ability to take advantage of it beyond their present market share and break even is highly suspect especially when they say they are going to "break even". That is they can't do it on price as their historic yields will not allow for any great leap in production to allow them to reduce street prices.

The great facet of INTC that is often overlooked is their ability to manufacture better than anyone else in the world. Manufacturing is both a science and an art. It requires that you reproduce one item exactly like the one before according to spec and at sufficient profit margins to allow flexibilty in marketing and in sufficient quantities to realize economies of scale. INTC does this better than anyone in the world at a very high value added per unit fabricated regardless of the product being made. This company is far more than a "chip" maker. AMD at best is a chip maker and doesn't have the capitalization to provide the necessary facets of R&D, manufacturing,Marketing and Engineering that INTC has. INTC is a very unique company. AMD is not JFD
