I have set-up several accounts on Yahoo! One I use when I'm there but the others just sit there. They don't close accounts, they just keep counting them. That's a huge difference between an AOL, (who charges, and thus can verify users) and a freebie like Yahoo!. YHOO's number of "users" are probably 30-40% lower than they claim. I alone count as 5 users according to them.
And the fact that they don't "purge" accounts that don't get used, after a specified period of time, means that even those people who register out of curiosity and never return, get counted as a "user" forever.
When this gets looked at in-depth, it will hit their bottom line (advertising dollars) hard.
