AltaVista Co said it registered 800,000 users for its Free
Access Internet service in the past three months, making it the
seventh-largest Internet service provider in the U.S. The company
also launched a similar free dial-up service in Canada. AltaVista
Free Access is powered by 1stUp.com, a company in which
AltaVista's parent, CMGI INC owns a majority stake. 1stUp
developed a new business model for free Internet access supported
by advertisements. In lieu of paying for the service, customers
have to view a permanent ad window on their screens. The ads can
not be minimized but can be moved to the top or the bottom of the
page to ease any viewing disruption. (Reuters 08:34 PM ET
