I agree with all this. BUT, if computer companies, like say Dell, who have never used AMD processors or have used them as a secondary source, are forced to use them as a primary source to satisfy their high-end customers for the next few months, doesn't that open the door for AMD to develop markets they have been shut off from previously? And once these once-closed have been opened then . . .??

This could possibly be an issue, except that AMD chose to make the Athlon pin/slot and chipset incompatible. In order to use the Athlon Dell would have to buy very-hard-to-come-by motherboards and chipsets designed for the Athlon. This is far different from buying AMD-486's to using in place of i486's or even from using the early K-series chips in place of Pentiums in a chip-selectable Super-7 board where you could use the same motherboards for both.
