Neocon, I am sure there is a word for "bum" in plain, ordinary, vernacular Mandarin. The whole point about Lu Xun, as I understand it , is that he used words like "bum," which were excluded from Literary Mandarin. As a result, there is no more difference today between "plain Mandarin" and "Literary Mandarin" than there is between "plain English" and "Literary English."

My information is all second-hand, of course. There are quite a few Chinese posting here on S.I. Find one, bring him/her over here, and then we can get some definitive answers to all these questions. :-)
