I think (hope!) Benny's calculation might be too pessimistic. (Hi, Benny!) When I left CKFR in 1997, over half of its employees were customer service representatives. Pete was proud of this ratio, as he believe(s)/(d) it was a strong indication of the company's dedication to customer service. They are, after all, a service company when you get down to it.

Anywho, the customer service goon (I can say that, I was one for two years before I finally made it to product development) came/comes in three different flavors, and each ususally cross-trained to handle at least one other job. The flavors are consumer customers, financial institution customers, or merchant customers.

The base wage for these guys in 1995 was $15.5K. So if half of the comapany is making, say $18K in 1999 (allowing for a tighter job market than in 1995), I think that stretches out your six weeks a good deal further. On the downside, though, the calculation does not take into account the cost of their generous benefits, which in 1995 included an aggressive three year vesting schedule on matched qualified contributions.
