I think that this feedback loop is also part of human nature. There is a drive among socially healthy people to achieve, to do the right thing. It allowed us to build villages. A village is a monumental exercise in coordinated effort and responsibility. The diff between a ten-thousand-year-old mud village in Mesopotamia and, say, New York City ... is just scale.

There is this marvelous-awful pull in all of us between the Butthead and the Nice Person. Here on DAR it's the Nice People who are unleashed to build a village. And when a teeth-gnashing alpha critter from the Other Leading Tribe shows up here, we naturally present a quiet but organized front to keep our front forty looking spiffy. (I wonder if "front forty" is an approved metaphor.)

I hope chaotic- ness isn't referring to housekeeping, or my children are all going to end up incarcerated, divorced, and violent.
