SUN REMAINS NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLDWIDE UNIX WORKSTATION MARKET AND DELL CAPTURES THE TOP SPOT IN WINDOWS NT WORKSTATIONS, IDC REVEALS

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17 1999 8:59 AM EST

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Nov 17, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- There was a small overall decrease in the total worldwide workstation market in Q3 1999, according to estimates released today from International Data Corporation (IDC). The decrease is typical as vendors experienced normal seasonal summer slowdowns. In addition, Y2K concerns had a small negative effect in selected sectors of the market, especially the financial sector.
For Q3, total branded workstation shipments (Unix plus Windows NT) were 412,900 units, down 3% over Q2 but up 23% over Q3 1998. The Windows NT branded workstation market was flat with Q2, while the Unix workstation market was down 7%. Compared to Q3 1998, Windows NT workstations increased 33% and Unix workstations increased 4%.
"Windows NT systems continue to drive the major growth in the workstation market, both in the United States and internationally," said Tom Copeland, vice president of workstation research at IDC. "However, Unix workstation sales are also up over Q3 last year, mostly due to Sun's increased shipments of software engineering systems for Internet development."
Typically workstation shipments increase in the fourth quarter. "However, fourth-quarter Windows NT shipments may remain flat this year because of nervousness among commercial segments with regards to Y2K. The most pressure is being felt from the financial markets where we have already seen instances of workstation purchasing freezes until 2000," said Kara Yokley, workstation research analyst at IDC. The Unix-based workstation market, which caters primarily to users in the technical space, has not been significantly affected by Y2K issues.
Branded Windows NT Workstation Market This quarter, for the first time, Dell captured the number one position in shipments of branded Windows NT workstations with 71,000 units worldwide and 27% market share. The company had impressive growth of 18% from last quarter, and 87% year over year. Dell also was number one in the United States with 37% market share.
Hewlett-Packard dropped to second place worldwide this quarter, but remained number one in Europe. The company had modest growth of 2% from last quarter and maintained 24% of the worldwide workstation market.
Compaq was number three this quarter with 18% market share. Strong sales in Asia/Pacific drove quarter over quarter growth at 7%.
IBM had a challenging quarter and was heavily affected by supply shortages. It had 12% worldwide market share and maintained a strong position in Japan. IBM is entering Q4 with a backlog of orders that should buoy shipments going into 2000.
Unix Workstation Market Combined, the top three vendors accounted for nearly 85% of the Unix workstation market. Sun captured 56% of the Unix workstation market and the number one position in the Unix-based workstation market, shipping 85,600 units this quarter. Shipments of the Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 remained strong and drove much of Sun's volume. Ultra 5 sales were particularly strong in software development for the Internet.
Hewlett-Packard retained the number two spot with 15% market share and IBM came in third with 13% of the Unix workstation market.
