U S West to Install New Wireless Network, Offer Data (Update1)

(Updates with stock activity.)

Denver, Nov. 17 (Bloomberg) -- U S West Inc., a local
telephone company that's merging with Qwest Communications
International Inc., said it will install a new network to improve
wireless Internet access in Salt Lake City.

The network will be built with equipment from Alcatel SA,
Ericsson AB, Nortel Networks Corp. and Tekelec. Its open design
and smaller antennas will allow U S West to deploy new wireless
''Web-to-go'' services more quickly and broadly than before.

Wireless-phone companies are racing to offer Internet access
and other new services on their phones to attract and keep
customers and increase phone usage. Beginning this month, U S
West's wireless-phone customers will have access to news,
financial and weather updates; enhanced text and numeric
messages; and text-based versions of Internet sites like U S
West's Dex Yellow Pages directory.

They'll be able to use their existing Qualcomm Inc. and
Nokia Oyj phones, a spokeswoman said.

U S West said it will use the new mini-tower network design
and ''PICOcell'' technology as it expands its wireless service to
22 new markets. The technology also will be used to offer
advanced services in U S West Wireless's 24 existing markets.

U S West, which had 344,000 wireless customers as of Sept.
30, provides local phone service in 14 western states.

U S West shares rose 5/16 to 66 1/4 in midmorning trading.
Qwest fell 3/4 to 38 5/8. Both companies are based in Denver.
NYSE/AMEX delayed 20 min. NASDAQ delayed 15 min.
