Store Owner Kills Would-Be Robber, D.C. Police Say

Thursday, December 23, 1999; Page B09

A grocer shot and killed a man who was trying to rob his store yesterday in Northeast Washington, D.C. police said.
Two men entered the Sunshine Country Market, at 1452 D St. NE, about 3:20 p.m., Lt. Linda Gilmore said.

She said the first man brandished a weapon, but she declined to disclose the type of weapon or whether any threats were made.

The store owner, whose name police are withholding because he is considered a witness, shot the first man, Gilmore said. The second man fled on foot.

The man who had been shot, whose identity police had not determined last night, was pronounced dead at D.C. General Hospital, Gilmore said. No one else was injured in the incident.

No charges have been filed in the case, and police said the investigation is continuing.
