Mike, what's driving the internet is banner advertisements. Companies will pay you to surf for the privilege of placing a banner in front of your eye-balls.

AOL and many others generates a lot of income from the banners in front of people when they log on. As an example, check out the rate structure of SI. go2net.com

Views on web-sites matter because the more people view the site, the more the site can charge in banner advertisement fee's. It's one of the reasons, I believe, computer companies are giving away computers to sign them up for 3 years of ISP service. They can see the future, ISP rates look poised to go down significantly over the next few years. So why not lock people into $21.00 a month fee's now?

The way I see it happening is something like this... In about 6-12 months a few of the pay-to-surf companies will reach 8 million banner users. Small ISP's will enter the fold and give free access to the net as long as you set their site as your home page. Other ISP providers will take notice and offer similar deals. Eventually AOL will cut rates in response. A complete market shift will have taken place!

It should be interesting to see if I am right on this one.

Best, Mike
