Not much talked about in this WIND rise is RedHat buying Cygnus. You have mentioned Linux entering the embedded market numerous times. How do you perceive Linux' impact to the embedded world? Do you think Linux will be suited for more than just STBs and smart terminals?

lkj,

I will come at it from a technology issue. Linux essentially does not have the real time capabilities. There is a real time version of linux floating around, but if I were designing a new box with an RTOS, I'd be wary of Linux. Also, the tools for porting the OS onto new custom hardware are more readily available on VxWorks.

RedHat buying Cygnus is a non-story. Both are Linux players, and Cygnus is pretty small. Linux will make some inroads into embedded world, but to build a value chain to go up against VxWorks takes a lot of time and concentrated effort. I'd be more weary of softy.

Cheers,
