Walter,

A nice Idea, but fanciful thinking... Here's why.

MP3.com Inc:
A company that allows artist to post their music for free, and 'consumers' do download it. Bottom line: free downloadable music. Most users wouldn't know what an mp3 encoder is, much less the name of companies like Fraunhofer who are responsible for the development of the technology that makes it work.

Blue Mountain Arts Publishing Co:
Everyone's mother's (in law) favorite internet site.Bottom line: Free internet greeting cards. But the average user (and I would bet many of you even) have no idea who Larry Wall is. He is the person who originally wrote the Perl scripting language. The genesis of the possibility of these sorts of things.

Red Hat Inc:
People have heard of this one since it is one of the most common OSes behind their beloved Windows... And it is a free flavor of THE os that runs their beloved internet. Bottom line: Free operating system. But I imagine that few realize that the technology that started this was born 30 years ago at bell labs (lucent!). And few will know the name Richard Stallman. He was the father of the philosophy of free software (GNU) that made something like Linux (and many other things like Perl) doable.

EDIG:
Our favorite little company... They dont make or put their name on anything that is hugely visible. They are an OEM. They are more like Fraunhofer than MP3.com. I will be quite surprised if they become a household name. Now this doesnt mean that they cant become a raging success. But you really cant complain that they don't have the sort of public exposure that companies like the ones above do. Wish that first the big dogs they are working with can make the technology they make more common in the marketplace.

Then we can all fantasize about our mother in law knowing the name of the company.

regards,
cAPSLOCK

Walter,

Your statement could lead one to believe that you know absolutely nothing about e.digital.

Maybe you were joking again.
