My apologies for getting on the wrong side of your mood. <g>

OPMR> OK, so what is the big deal with adding up your own grocery bill at the checkout?

How many times have you gone to the grocery store for just a few items only to find there is only one express line open and the line is a mile long. What U-Scan does is replace two standard checkout lanes with four self service checkout stands. One store employee monitors all four terminals from a central location. This makes for much greater efficiency. As you probably know finding cashiers who will work for want grocery chains are willing to pay is difficult in our tight labor market. These machines pay for themselves very quickly. And customers like them too.

Kroger, who is the nations largest grocery store chain with 2200 stores, has already installed around 150 systems and just ordered another 200 systems. A & P just ordered 100 systems. Wal-Mart and a number of others either testing or installing systems in their stores.

I think this is going to catch on just like the ATM and Pay at the Pump did. That is why the stock is going though the roof.

First off, won't everybody just cheat like crazy???

All terminals are monitored by video. In addition a scale below the shopping bag checks the weight of all item placed in the bag after scanning. The weight of each item is known by the system. If you place a non-scanned item in the bag the system will ask you to scan it as well as notifying the person monitoring the system.

and besides, come to think of it, who even eats anymore?

Well if eating goes out of style then I guess there won't be much of a market for these machines. Or any other machines as far as that goes. <g>
