Satyam Computers banking on acquisitions to spur growth

Satyam Computers will target acquisitions and strategic investments in companies to fortify its business. This was reported by a leading business daily.

Since its inception in 1987, Satyam Computers (Satyam) has focussed on software development and infotech (IT) services on mainframes (legacy system). Close to 60% of revenues come from mainframe-related jobs.

Satyam has outlined ambitious plans to acquire companies with matching mindsets to beef up its operations. It will focus on global operations so as to enhance its presence in the global software market. It has targeted Australia, South East Asia, Middle East and South Africa as regions where it will have a significant presence. But that does not mean that it will ignore India. It plans to set up more development centers in the country.

Increasing focus on products at the expense of services marks another fundamental strategic shift. Satyam will concentrate more on e-commerce applications and web-enabling tools. Some of these products are in the beta stage and the final version will be out in some time.

By increasing focus on products, Satyam will move up the IT value chain. The upside in products is much higher, if the product succeeds. But so is the downside, if it fails. Apart from product development costs there are also significant marketing costs involved. But some Indian companies (NIIT, Satyam) seem to have realised the potential and pitfalls of product development and have outlined ambitious plans in this regard.

Market view:

Satyam's successful foray into products (Vision Compass), combined with the strong performance of its ISP arm (Satyam Infoway) and spurt in onsite revenues have prompted analysts to flag the stock as a 'BUY'.
