I am not talking about tourism, which is also a form of "consumerism," although on a relatively high plane. I am talking about getting to know another people, another place, another way of looking at things. Gaining a new perspective, as it were. It helps, of course, if you know the local language. How's your French?

Neocon, I also consider myself well educated, yet even conversing with my friend with the house from hell over the years has been immensely broadening, as have my friendships with people from India and Pakistan and Nigeria. It's more a question of perspective and comprehension of people of other cultures than viewing as a tourist.
