chuzz.....re: dell puts..

concur this is the best strategy for dell, based on its performance this year...i sold earlier in the year 115 contracts of 01 55 and 60...cost if put to me 34.........received 285k premium with stock at 41.25........to buy back now would cost 215.......so nine month profit of 70k or about 6 points average per contract......dell stock didn't help......time erosion did!

Chuzzlewit, RE: Other box makers end their accounting period in September, so the effects of the higher DRAM prices are likely to be manifest for Dell's competitors in the next earnings report.

True, but the flip side is that demand for the Xmas season seems to be higher than expected, and Intel is having difficulty filling orders beyond what was initially promised. This would seem to point to a stronger than expected December, especially for boxmakers with sufficient inventory to satisfy demand (i,e, CPQ, HWP, et. al.). My guess is that the Dec + will balance out the Oct -.

On a completely different tack, how are you able to do a detailed cash flow analysis of LU without a 10-K?

Chuzz -
re: Other box makers end their accounting period in September, so the effects of the higher DRAM prices are likely to be manifest for Dell's competitors in the next earnings report

I don't think DELL's competitors had the same problem and doubt their costs were affected in the same way. This was not just the DRAM price hike - DELL had long term contracts, many of which expired over the summer. Because of their bet on RAMBUS, they did not renew those to the same level as previously. When Intel delayed the RAMBUS chipsets, DELL had to purchase on the spot market and with short term contracts. The other majors did not have as large a bet on RAMBUS - CPQ and HP, for example, were planning on a launch more than 90 days behind DELL so they were already planning on DRAM vs. RAMBUS for 3Q and 4Q.

IBM of course is capable of supplying its own DRAM if needed...

SO I think this was an anomaly which just happened to hit DELL.
