The JCS 2000 program was an internal Sprint development project established to replace the carrier's long-distance infrastructure with a next-generation, voice-over-ATM architecture. As part of the multi-vendor JCS 2000 program, Tellabs delivered the AN2100 system, a TDM-to-ATM gateway custom-designed for the Sprint network architecture. In addition to its activities in the JCS 2000 program, Tellabs has developed a more fully featured version of the AN2100 product to address the needs of other potential customers. "While we are obviously disappointed, Sprint's decision to not implement the JCS 2000 program was in no way related to the AN2100 product or the development efforts at Tellabs," said Brian J. Jackman, President of Global Products and Technologies for Tellabs. "We remain confident that next-generation switching, as represented by the AN2100 GX solution, will be the vehicle by which carriers migrate from today's circuit-switched world to a new public network that integrates carrier-class ATM and IP switching." Building on the AN2100 technology first deployed by Sprint, Tellabs' new AN2100 GX solution incorporates significant call control, SS7 signaling and service-control capabilities. In addition to the basic gateway functions provided in the AN2100 system, the new AN2100 GX solution allows service providers to deliver revenue-generating intelligent network services such as 800 calling, local number portability, calling name delivery, and prepaid services. The AN2100 GX solution, which will be ready for trials in first quarter 2000, has received great interest from a variety of carriers, both in North America and internationally. Additionally, Tellabs anticipates that a voice-over-IP version of the AN2100 GX solution will be ready for field trials in mid 2000.
